The Power of Rest

To define the power of rest I’d have to be able to experience it without guilt, frustration and a level of discomfort that is making noises in my head like;

“You’re so lazy!”

“What if you can’t get started again?”

“What if you miss out on a wonderful opportunity?”

“What if you can’t pay the bills?”

“What if you become unloved, un-thought of or boring and irrelevant?”

At this stage of my life I’d say being comfortable around taking time out to do NOTHING is a work in progress. #goals

On Sunday 10th December our topic at Red Tent Aotearoa is The Power of Rest and together we will be learning, and getting comfortable with this new superpower called REST!

I think it’s about choosing to do things at a pace that allows time for thought and consideration, rather than trying to do 50 things in the space of five minutes and then wondering why my nervous system feels completely fried afterwards.

It involves making a conscious choice to prioritise calm and peace of mind, and then making choices aligned with those priorities.

Let’s just get this out of the way, shall we: women are so socially conditioned to go at full-steam all (or most) of the time that when we even consider slowing down a little, most of us can find ourselves feeling like we’re either going to explode or go into a meltdown (or possibly a bit of both)

This is generational for most of us…

When my Mum was a high school student doing Home Economics her role model was ‘Mrs Modern Mother’, a housewife who had all her shit sorted and was the envy of her neighbours…

Mrs Modern mother had the whitest sheets (ironed of course) and the best behaved children, the cleanest floors (you could eat off them) she was genteel, a ‘good’ wife. BARF!!

 But just because everyone else is running at a pace that makes “Mrs Modern Mother” look like a snail on a go-slow strike, that doesn’t mean you are obligated to keep up with everyone else. In fact, by allowing yourself to succumb to the pressure to keep up with everyone else you actually become part of the ‘everyone else’ that puts pressure on other people as well! Be the change you wish to see- GO SLOWER! Rushing is violence!!

Look, I’m definitely not perfect at this stuff and I have days where I’m good with it and other days where I’m a mess.

But together we’ll try to work on this and get comfortable with resting….
